Awapuni School:
Awapuni is a strong ICT school, which initiated CIH by finding local business sponsors, with a view to starting 3 families on CIH. Since securing MoE funding, and beginning the parent training on the NetPod, the Steering Committee has opted to build their own PC's for families, rather than freight recycled ones in from Auckland . This would give them a 3-yr local guarantee on components, rather than a 6mth warranty they could not viably pursue.
The school's computer technician/trainer is a PhD who serves a number of local schools. CIH visited these schools: Te Hapara, Cobham and Kaiti, which could form a basis for a Gisborne CIH extension. A need for CIH in Wairoa was also identified, especially in view of recent school closures in the region. The Kaiti principal moves to lead Wairoa Primary in 2005.
