Far North CPF has begun out of Herekino School which sits between Kaitaia and the Hokianga Harbour. As such it is a central point for nearby communities to attend training at the school’s ICT whare on their way to town. As with many CIH projects there is a story of links and associations which make up the journey to becoming part of our ever-growing network of community based providers and learners.

The Herekino School Principal had already enquired about CIH before staff & community members attended Microsoft’s Uplift programme (for training community ICT leaders in partnership with Dept Internal affairs and Whitireia Polytechnic). The group chose 2 coordinators and set up Te Roopu Whai Pukenga to manage the idea and made a submission to the Digital Strategy in consultation with 2020 Communications Trust and CIH. Now, in partnership with Far North REAP as the funded body they are contracted to DIA to deliver CIH to 50 families in the region.

The next task was to refurbish the school whare which had been used as a shed for “putting everything in that no one knew where else to put stuff”! The transformation has been stupendous and the trainers have to send their learners home because they want to continue after hours!

4 schools and 3 Marae will be impacted by the Far North CPF project and the first graduation for 20 families is in April.

Schools: Herekino, Broadwood Area, Hata Maria (Pawarenga), Panguru Area

Marae: Manukau, Whangape, Rangikohu.
