Opotiki Project (current):
October 2007:
Opotiki joined CIH in 2005 with Whangaparaoa School near Cape Runaway and then 2 Kura Kaupapa Maori in
2006: TKKM O Torere and TKKM O Ahureinga. All 3 schools have produced enthusiastic whanau learners who have made best use of their CIH experience. A number of nannies and aunties attended training so they could support their mokopunas' learning, and Whangaparaoa School ran ICT courses for Te Tairawhiti Polytechnic to encourage community advancement.
Decmber 2006:
TKKM O Torere and TKKM O Ahureinga of Opotiki combined their graduation which included Kaumatua involved in educating their Mokopuna.
Comments from the Whanau:
“Two of our older whanau members aged 57 and 73 years respectively have never had the confidence to switch on a Computer , but for the Computers in Homes programme and the whanau setting they gain confidence. They all realize that they must upskill so that they can keep up with their mokopuna.
There was more laughter and joy coming from the whanau, during the lessons. The laughter accelerated computer skills learning and the fact that the whanau were busting the door down to get to computer classes. Students sat by their parents or grandparents to assist learning. There was a great feeling of unity and aroha. Great capacity building for the whanau.
People in our small community look amazed when Ahureinga talks about this programme – The Computers in Homes.
A photo and a little article will be featured in the Christmas school holiday blurb, promotion of Ahureinga in the Opotiki News, so that the community can read about this amazing programme and how it has and will empower the students and the whanau of Ahureinga.
Thanks to the Ark and Di Das for being efficient and so helpful and supportive at every turn and bend in Ahureinga's little Computer in Homes journey. And to the Ministry of Education for this powerful opportunity to enhance and empower the students, whanau of Ahureinga and in many ways – the indigenous, nation building of the Whakatohea Iwi.
Thanks Di for everything.
Nga manaakitanga
Kayreen”
