Whangaparaoa School is situated at the beautiful and isolated location of Cape Runaway and has provided leadership for the surrounding community by encouraging as many people as possible to be involved in ICT education. The Principal and other staff teach ICT courses for Te Tai Rawhiti Polytechnic from the school's small suite, so CIH fitted in well with t he philosophy already present. We extended the Net Pod to its maximum 10 workstations so that more CIH parents and grandparents can take advantage of further education past the 20hrs offered by CIH, as ongoing training appears to be a critical component in sustaining CIH projects. After the initial twenty- five families were chosen, including 4 families from nearby Raukokore School, CIH was able to add another 4 with laptops from Coke Oceania for families with unreliable power supplies. Principal Mihi Pook reports that the school has parents visiting on a daily basis, with many eager to pursue further education as a result of their participation in CIH. Te Tai Rawhiti has since extended the courses available to be taught at the school site on the strength of the new ICT foundation built by CIH.
Whangaparaoa School continues to operate as a satellite campus for Te Tai Rawhiti Polytechnic, running ICT courses to support CIH families, with 6 parents recently graduating with their Computer Driver's Licence. A further 20 have enrolled on Level 3 courses, divided into 2 groups on their ability. A parent is developing her own website for her business as tour guide in the local area. Previously she relied on signage at her gate, but now looks forward to securing bookings via the Web for her small family business in this remote but historical and picturesque area.
