CIH Projects for Refugee Children and their Families
Alongside the growing number of 'generic' Computers in Homes projects, CIH and 2020 have been working in partnership with MoE since 2004 to serve refugee communities in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Nelson and Porirua.
This has provided 220 families with a recycled computer, training, 12 months internet, translators and technical support for the families. MoE has even arranged transport and babysitting to ensure parents could attend.
It has been a privilege for us to be associated with the Refugee Education division of MoE and to meet families from Somalian, Sudanese, Afghani, Iraqi, Ethiopian, Congolese, Burmese and Chin communities.

2020 Communications Trust has been contracted by the Ministry of Education to run its CIH programme for Refugee Children and their families. This is organised and funded through the ESOL and Resettlement Education division of MoE, with a view to assisting newly arrived refugee families adjust to life in Aotearoa NZ.
It is critical that children with refugee backgrounds engage in the NZ education system and that their parents learn how to support them in their learning, especially families with secondary school age children.
MoE Regional Refugee Education Coordinators choose local educational facilities to provide the training and technical expertise, while CIH National office arranges the hardware, Internet connections and CIH expertise. The projects run out of schools, high schools and community education centres and involve RMS and ethnic community leaders.
It is this multi-faceted partnership between MoE, CIH, local training providers and community which has created an effective team approach to provide opportunity to families in need since 2004. We have been fortunate enough to find tutors of high calibre, interpreters, technicians and family visitors with commitment and drive, and excellent local providers willing to host and manage the programme.
After training, families receive a refurbished computer, free technical support and internet accounts for 12 months.
