Mohaka School provided computer desks for all their CIH families and children made a video of their parents' graduation. CIH has worked with TPK Wairoa office to compile CIH data on “Digital Whanau” in the region to report to the Minister of Maori Affairs, with a view to TPK's Capacity Building helping to fund future CIH trainers and technicians in the area.
Wairoa Primary and Mohaka schools are both rebuilding their school communities following school closures and mergers. Both have been supported by regional technician Leon Symes, and the extension to the region came with incoming Wairoa Principal Tim Jones, who was previously at Kaiti in Gisborne. The DP and another staff member delivered the training, and report marked changes in the confidence in parents.
One was asked to offer the karakia for the graduation, which was attended by Wairoa Mayor and by Minister of Maori Affairs and Associate Minister of Education, the Hon. Parekura Horomia who spoke about “digital whanau” and made a commitment to support CIH families further.
Mohaka Principal Diane Barrett documented the CIH training and graduation on video. She tells of much comradie and interaction between parents and staff, created by the school's involvement in the programme. All Mohaka families now have access to ICT at home.
Wairoa Primary Principal Tim Brown writes:
“Our programme is still going well with families making the most of the new hardware and skill acquisition. I now email minutes of meetings to those on committees and some teachers also use this service to keep in contact. Most parents still say their children are the experts and use them for help. Neat eh.
I have a meeting next week with a person for a local polytech who wants to support the programme by providing online computer education programmes. This could be quite supportive.
Apart from a couple of repair jobs required on a couple of machines, things are going along smoothly.
Keep in touch with us please as we will be looking to extend the programme.”
CIH has had further enquiries from the Wairoa region, namely Tiaho and Nuhaka Schools .
