Hokitika, Blackball, Ross & Runanga Schools:
CIH and REAP have worked closely together to support Hokitika Primary in setting up its project.
CIH has also put a training pod into the REAP Community Education Centre to support extra training for those CIH families with literacy needs. In 2004 Westland was identified as the area with the lowest literacy in NZ, so CIH is keen to be part of the solution.
Ross, Runanga and Blackball schools have been affected by school amalgamations and were pleased to be part of CIH. We combined the intakes with West REAP's Adult Literacy program and they graduated their first CIH parents in May.
This successful CIH/West REAP partnership continues to produce results in family literacy in the area. There is ongoing training and support for CIH families over the rest of the year and CIH families without landlines can utilise the CIH Net Pod at the REAP training centre.
Principals from the three schools were happy that West REAP locally coordinated and supported the program for the families, as it allowed staff to focus on daily school activities.
